Synopsis
Umaru is a renowned beautiful 16-year-old girl in town, living with her elder brother Taihei. She acts a perfect sister with a kind heart, intelligence and popularity, who everybody admires. So who would believe how true Umaru is at home? Sleeping, gaming, watching TV, eating junk food, drinking cola… that’s almost all she does at home, leaving all the housework to her brother.
Her camouflage is so perfect that when one of her classmates visits her home by surprise and witnesses “true Umaru,” she pretends as if she is Umaru’s younger sister. Taihei is always swayed by Umaru’s gap between ostensible face and spoiled life, but he cannot hate his comical and somehow lovable cute little sister!

Story
Umaru is known to be the perfect girl in town. She has a kind heart, has many talents, she’s popular, and intelligent, many people admire her. But that’s only the outside nature of Umaru. At home, she transforms into a chibi Umaru, and reveals her true nature, which is being an otaku. Sleeping, gaming, watching anime, reading manga, eating potato chips, drinking cola, doing nothing. She’s lazier than a rock, and somewhat a spoiled imouto.
Umaru has been always taken care of by her older brother, Taihei. Though Taihei hates the lazy side of Umaru, he cannot stop always spoiling her. He does all the work in the house while Umaru’s just playing games, or any other things that an otaku would do.
So, the story just revolves around the life of an otaku. How Umaru acts like a perfect and responsible person on the outside, but is lazier than a rock when she’s inside the house.
Characters
Umaru has two personalities, the one that everybody admires, and the one that is very lazy, which is when she is at her house when she starts to shift into her chibi form. Personally, it’s really a trouble if you would have an imouto like this, in real life of course, but in the anime world, it’s rather a cute thing to have an imouto like this.
Taihei is the older brother of Umaru. He’s always the one who is doing all the household work. Though Taihei may seem really tired from work, he does not leave his imouto behind. He always keep after her and takes care of her, despite her being lazy af and a little annoying. You could say that Taihei is a brother that you’ll wish to have, for every otaku lol.
Ebina is the friend and classmate of Umaru. She’s from Akita, which means her dialect is different from other people. Her dialect reverts to its original if she gets nervous or gets excited. I think she secretly has a crush on Taihei, you’ll see if you have watched the episodes. No…. Actually, she does have a crush on Taihei, but she just keeps it to herself and never gets a chance to tell to Taihei what she really feels on the inside. I still ship them though, Ebina x Taihei.
Kirie is also one of Umaru’s classmates and Umaru’s friend. She’s very shy towards other people and she can only talk normally to her shishou, Komaru (Umaru in chibi form). But later on she begins to talk normally to other people with the help of Komaru.
Sylphinford is UMR’s (Umaru’s) friend and also her rival when it comes to games. Sylphin doesn’t know that UMR is actually Umaru, but she became good friends with both of the different personalities of Umaru. She kinda has a hime-type of nature.
Motoba, also known as Bomber, is a co-worker of Taihei, and he’s also Taihei’s friend. He’s the older brother of Kirie. He’s also really lazy when it comes to work, and he usually slacks off at work. He gets really jealous when he hears Taihei hangs out with girls, in which that girl was actually Umaru.
Alex is also a co-worker of Taihei. He’s the older brother of Sylphin and just like his imouto, he likes to play video games and watch anime.
Kanau is the female boss of Taihei, Bomber, and Alex. She’s been friends with Taihei and Bomber ever since high school, she actually has a secret crush on Taihei. For me, this is my ship #2 for Taihei, Kanau x Taihei.
Art and Sound
For the art, it’s really great and has a nice and a good animation. It has a relaxing style of art, and makes it really enjoyable and relaxing to watch the anime. Most of the characters are drawn moe-style, especially the chibi form of Umaru.
The sound was also great. Though, it uses the same soundtracks for every episode, well not actually all episode. The fitting of the sounds for every episode is great. The OP theme got my attention and it has been one of my favorite OP theme.
Overall
Overall this anime is great if you want some laughs. Otaku can surely relate to the life of Umaru. I guess some of us wants to live the life of Umaru in some ways. Like doing nothing, just playing video games, and watching anime without nothing to worry about. I personally would recommend to watch this because the jokes are good and would make you laugh. I was expecting a somewhat incest-y theme, and I’m glad that it didn’t happen lol. Well you know, it has the title “imouto”, and the first thing that I thought was Oreimo, which was a slight incest anime. So for the rating, it’s a 8/10 for me.
