Durarara!! – Review

Synopsis

In Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro, amidst many strange rumors and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants, one urban legend stands out above the rest—the existence of a headless “Black Rider” who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.

Ryuugamine Mikado has always longed for the excitement of the city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend convinces him to move to Tokyo. Witnessing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes already seem to have been granted. But as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, along with Ikebukuro’s most colorful inhabitants, are mixed up in the commotion breaking out in their city.

Story

Durarara!! has a complicated story, which means it’s hard to know what’s really the plot of the story. But having a complicated story made this anime very unique to other anime. The complicated story is what made Durarara!! awesome.

Ok, what made the story complicated? Well, there are a lot of characters that are introduced in this anime, and for every minute, I think, comes another scene. Like for example the main character is at school (Mikado), then all of a sudden a headless rider (Celty) is suddenly introduced riding the streets of Ikebukuro. But here’s what made it awesome. The scenes were not just random scenes, each scene gets connected at some point. Basically, each scene is the character’s point of view, so if something is happening here, another scene is happening there, but they happened at the same time.

The setting is in Ikebukuro, this city is filled with many supernatural happenings. Along with gangs, the headless rider, flying vending machines, and others.

Art and Sound

Hey, here’s what I liked the most. The art style of this anime is just superb. I don’t know but the animation and art style makes me want to watch more of this anime. It’s pretty simple but also unique in some way.

Now for the soundtrack, the first opening (“Uragiri no Yuuyake (裏切りの夕焼け; Sunset of Betrayal)” by Theatre Brook) was great, but in my opinion the second opening (“Complication (コンプリケイション)” by ROOKiEZ is PUNK’D) was better. The second opening has been my ringtone ever since I watched DRRR!!. Now the soundtrack for scenes, they fit perfectly, whether it’s gonna be suspense or just like a gang war theme. The first ending theme (“Trust Me” by Yuya Matsushita) has been also one of my favorite anime ending theme song.

Characters

This is a tough part, there are so many characters in Durarara!!. But here’s a short explanation of the characters of DRRR!!. I think the main character in this anime, is the city itself, the City of Ikebukuro. Because almost everything that happens here is in Ikebukuro and every scene actually gets connected to each other. It’s like the city is telling the story of each character of DRRR!!

For now, I’ll just introduce to you guys of one of the main character of Durarara!!. Ryuugamine Mikado, moved to Tokyo because of an invitation from a childhood friend, Kida Masaomi. On his first day in Tokyo, he witnessed already the Black Rider, which is believed to be an urban legend. You’ll be surprised on how great Mikado’s character development will be.

If I continue any further I might accidentally write a spoiler, so I’ll stop with the characters here.

Overall

Overall this anime is great. You may have some trouble keeping up with the first few episodes, but you will eventually get the hang of it once you proceed to the later episodes. This anime is a gang-themed anime, but at the same time it also has the supernatural genre. So I recommend watching this anime. Now for the rating, I rate 9/10.

This anime has a sequel titled “Durarara !!x2 Shou”, and this sequel has a second arc titled “Durarara!!x2 Ten”, which is currently ongoing for today.
