Hyouka – Review

“If I don’t have to do it, I won’t. If I have to do it, I’ll make it quick.”
-Oreki Houtarou

Oreki Houtarou is a minimalistic high school boy. One day, he joins the Classic Literature Club at his elder sister’s request.

There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, “I’m interested in it.” Fukube is a smiling boy with a fantastic memory who calls himself a database. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself.

They begin to investigate a case that occurred 45 years ago. Hints of the mystery are buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Classics Club. The collection is titled “Hyouka.”

Hyouka follows the story of Oreki Houtarou, the main protagonist of the anime. Oreki is a very lazy high school student but despite his laziness, he can solve puzzles or mysteries better than everyone else in the anime. Made by the producer, KyoAni. Well you can easily notice the producer who made Hyouka because of the animation style.

Now let’s get back to the story, the plot is mainly on solving mysteries and puzzles. Oreki decided to join the Classic Literature Club because he was forced to join by his sister’s request. There he met Chitanda Eru who was silently looking at the window (prepare for the kininarimasu). The first mystery case was shown when the two met each other. After that he meets the other characters which is Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka, who then also decided to join the Classic Literature Club.

Their main mystery case is a collection titled “Hyouka” (which has a pun if you watched the anime). It is an old collection of works of the former members of the Classics Club but the mystery here is the title of the book. Why was it titled Hyouka? Well the mystery has been solved in a few episodes but there are more mysteries that happen the longer you watch the anime.

“Watashi kininarimasu (I’m curious)”. Once you see these eyes, there’s no stopping Chitanda Eru for being curious.

Chitanda Eru is known to be really curious, yeah really really curious about everything. Everything that happens, or everything that mystery is solved by Oreki, she will go to curious mode with the popular “Watashi kininarimasu”.
